Layton is a city in the state of Utah. It is located in Davis County, part of the Ogden–Clearfield, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is named after Christopher Layton, a Mormon colonizer and leader. Layton was settled in the 1850s originally as an outgrowth of Kaysville, but separated in the early 1900's when the residents disputed the fact that they were paying taxes, yet receiving no municipal services.
The population of the town increased slowly (up until 1940 it was a little over 500). The population really began to grow after the creation of Hill Air Force Base to the north in 1940. This, followed the outbreak of World War II, caused the population to explode; the 1950 census counted 3456 people.
Layton became a full city, transforming from a once farming town into a residential community. Although growth slowed after the war, Layton continued to grow as a suburban bedroom community; those not employed at the Air Force base commuting to the Salt Lake City or Ogden areas.
The city annexed surrounding parcels of land, including two smaller communities: the town of Laytona in 1957 and the city of East Layton in 1981. In 1985, Layton passed Bountiful to become the most populous city in Davis County.
